SECUNDARY PROGRESSIONS

WHAT IS IT? WHAT IS A PROGRESSED CHART? WHAT IS A PROGRESSION IN ASTROLOGY?

A progressed chart is the chart for the xth day after birth, valid for the xth year after birth*). The idea is that the earth, moving around, ‘shows’  the complete universe in a day, like the movement around the sun shows this in a year time. So: one day equals one year (in a way).  Progressions tell you wath you will meet on the way, throughout life.

Progressions (see also link to Wikipedia for more explanation) are found like this: check any ephemeris and calculate 1 day for 1 year.

If you were born on March 1 and you are 20 years old, you use the positions of March 21 for the progressed chart. There is a lot of information in the bookstore and on the internet about (secondary) progressions. An easy way to find your progressed chart is to use Astro.com’s free chart service. BTW The Sun moves about 1 degree in a year (more in winter, less in summer). So if you take 1 degree for each year and add that one degree to your natal Sun’s degrees you get an idea of the new position: the progressed Sun’s position.

ASPECTS OF THE SUN IN SECONDARY PROGRESSION

The progressed Sun is the position of the sun x day after birth for x year after birth. The new position of the sun creates new aspects (distances with a meaning) with Moon and planets in the natal and progressed chart. Those aspects of the progressed Sun create a new situation or state of mind. The nature of the aspect and the planet involved colors the meaning of the progressed aspect. For example:

JUPITER will usually let you grow, give you support, help you on the way or grant you successes
SATURN will usually make you aware of responsibilities, mistakes and restrictions (like coming from parents or law) and age, time to settle down, too
URANUS is the planet that wakes you up if you were sleeping or wake up the others to when you wanted them to be asleep. It is a planet that causes upheaval and changes, but sometimes it is just a surprise…
NEPTUNE is the planet of illusions and disillusions, isolation and seclusion (sometimes welcome with artists or mediums)
PLUTO is the planet of re- (revitalization, reformation, return) and stress sometimes. When Pluto is there life is more intense and stressy than ever. That is not always bad! Sometimes Pluto is reflecting a revival!

Here are interpretations to start your study of the progressed Sun and aspects with the progressed Sun.

Conjunction Soft Hard Inconjunct Opposition With
New motivation Lust of life, starting a family or changing lifestyle Changing lifestyle with the spotlight on emotions Lost motivation, emotional drain Heart or soul? Questions of motivation… Moon

EXAMPLES AND MORE INFO

The progressed Sun-Venus aspects are mostly pleasant, though sometimes when life ends Sun-Venus means ‘ rest in peace’. More about the Progressed Sun-Venus with examples on Astropost.blogspot.com.

Mr. Tarazin got fired with Progressed Sun square Mars. For women it’s sometimes ‘another story’: Kate Middleton marries Prince Wlliam in the year of progressed Sun trine Mars!

With transit Jupiter inconjunct progressed Sun Lance Armstrong experienced the possible negative effect of Jupiter.

Periods ending often start with Sun-Saturn: http://astropost.blogspot.com/2010/10/sun-and-saturn-like-in-chart-of-gretha.html

In the Astropost ‘ Statue for the enemy’ I mention the effect of a progressed Sun inconjunct Uranus in the chart of a German soldier who died shortly after he rescued two Dutch children during the Second World War. At the time he was a stranger (an official enemy) who wanted to be friends with the locals and who didn’t feel at home among his own folks.

With progressed Sun in aspect with Neptune, your illusions will be in the spotlights and so are your secrets. If you have Sun-Neptune in your natal chart, this moment in time might shed a light over the other side of you, the private life or the secret life (an affair, your nick name). More about it here…When Lindsey Lohan was isolated she had progressed Sun inconjunct Neptune (and more, see the post on Astropost.blogspot.com).

A progressed Sun conjunct Pluto marks a period of dramatic changes. It takes some courage to overcome problems. In the end you might be strong enough to start all over again or to come back. Sometimes circumstances force or encourage you to start a new kind of living. Many of the examples mentioned in the article about Sun-Pluto are examples of life in danger or in a challenging period of change. The transit of Pluto on my Sun was intense, but the progressed Sun opposition Pluto and progressed Pluto didn’t have that effect. More on Astropost…

PROGRESSED SUN/MOON

One of the most important midpoints in a chart is the midpoint Sun/Moon. This midpoint informs you about ‘motivation’, for example, about family life and the most important needs. The aspects with the progressed Sun/Moon midpoint tells us what is your temporary focus and motivation and if there are any events in family life at a certain moment.

Here is more information about how to calculate and interpret the progressed Sun/Moon midpoint. For more about midpoints and Sun/Moon, see this link. For more about progressions, go here

A progressed chart is the chart for the xth day/hour after birth, meant for the xth year after birth. In a progressed chart the positions of Sun and Moon change, of course, as the progressed chart shows positions of 1 day = 1 year later. The Sun/Moon midpoint is the point between Sun and Moon. The progressed chart for a certain moment includes the progressed positions of Sun and Moon. The progressed midpoint Sun/Moon is the point between progressed Sun and progressed Moon. This doesn’t last for long, just a few weeks or months and indicates what important event is going on. When I found out that on my wedding day transit Jupiter was conjunct the progressed midpoint Sun/Moon I was encouraged to find out more about it.

Any aspect with Sun/Moon is important for your wellbeing and for the nature of family life (relationships/marriage). I noticed that even inconjunctions have relevance. How about transits and progressions with your Sun/Moon? I think that transits and progressions with Sun/Moon might have a strong effect on how you feel. People grow and progressed charts show us in what direction. The progressed Sun/Moon shows how our motivation is being influenced in the course of time.

Let’s see if what I think could be true.

1. OBAMA AND SATURN

Barack Obama’s Sun/Moon midpoint is at 97.94 degrees, the 8th degree of Cancer. When transit Saturn was square his Sun/Moon midpoint, the poll results were rather bad and I guess that this didn’t cheer him up. Saturn can be rather depressing when you have bad polls. You see, Saturn on Sun/Moon shows you plain reality and the need for stability and respect. It can be good and it can be bad, depending on the rest of your chart.

2. MICHAEL DOUGLAS AND PLUTO

Michael Douglas has transit Pluto semi square Sun/Moon, following the transit of Saturn over Sun and Moon and midpoint Sun/Moon. We all know about his challenging period right now (trying to conquer cancer).

Pluto on Sun/Moon shows that you need strength and courage.

See: http://astropost.blogspot.com/2010/10/michael-douglas-and-pluto.html

3. GEORGE MICHAEL AND NEPTUNE

George Michael’s Sun/Moon in the 27th degree of Cancer was inconjunct Neptune in September/October, during his time in jail (Neptune is the symbol of shame, isolation and with the inconjunction of lost illusions). Sun/Moon with Neptune shows the need of privacy and hiding away.

See: http://astropost.blogspot.com/2010/09/george-michael-gets-eight-weeks.html

4. JOE BIDEN AND PLUTO

Joe Biden had T Pluto at 29d22 Sagittarius semi square his progressed Sun/Moon in 14d16 Aquarius on Election Day. Pluto crossed the progressed Sun/Moon midpoint several times in the last months of 2008. He was confronted with the death of a family member and his son left for Iraq in an intense period of political confrontations! It was transformation time.

5. MY SUN/MOON

With Progressed Mercury conjunct Sun/Moon (need to study) I finished the academy. Mercury is the symbol of study and schooling. Continuing study (Progressed Mercury) happened to be highlighted (Sun and Moon).

In a progressed chart the positions of Sun and Moon change, of course, as the progressed chart shows positions of 1 day = 1 year later. Sun/Moon also changes with the rest of the chart. When I found out that on my wedding day transit Jupiter was conjunct the progressed midpoint Sun/Moon I was encouraged to find out more about it. On a first working day after a period of rest, Pallas was conjunct my Progressed Sun/Moon. I had to live in a pattern (Pallas symbolizes patterns) again…

CONCLUSION

Don’t just look at the natal midpoint Sun/Moon but have a look at the progressed Sun/Moon midpoint, too. It might be a usefull tool to find or select a perfect day. Mine will be on January 6, 2009: Venus opposition Sun/Moon. Sometimes New Years speaches are real fun, I guess.

BTW As the Moon moves quickly, the Sun/Moon midpoint moves about 8 degrees each progressive year. When planets like Venus or Mercury or Mars move over this midpoint, it won’t have a long lasting effect.
